IMF in Beijing in 10 years

The headquarters of the International Monetary Fund could be relocated from Washington to Beijing. This was stated, as a possibility, by the director general of the institute Christine Lagarde at the Center for Global Development, a think tank in Washington, on the day in which the institute updated its economic estimates by reducing those of the USA and raising those of Italy, Lagarde he recalled that by regulation the Fund must be based in its largest member country. Since the foundation of the institution, the United States has dominated the world economy resulting in the main shareholder of the IMF with 16,5% of the board votes. But in ten years, China's GDP could exceed America's in nominal terms. For this Lagarde explained that “if we had this conversation in 10 years, we might not be sitting in Washington. We could be in our headquarters in Beijing ”. The last time the Fund revised its voting structure was in 2010; a new analysis is expected to start next year.
