In Barcelona, ​​the Operational Team of the Spanish Civil Guard has located and captured the dangerous fugitive from San Luca (RC) ROMEO Giuseppe born in 1986, as part of a police operation made possible by the cooperation provided by the investigators of the State Police.

The location of the well-known fugitive, included in the list of the most dangerous, was possible thanks to the men of the Mobile Squad of the Reggio Calabria Police Headquarters and the Central Operational Service of the Central Anti-Crime Directorate of the State Police under the aegis of the DDA of Reggio Calabria directed by the Public Prosecutor Giovanni BOMBARDIERI, in close collaboration with the International Police Cooperation Service (SCIP) of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police as part of the wider I-Can (Interpol Coopeperation Against 'Ndrangheta) project promoted by Italy together with the General Secretariat of the OIPC-Interpol of Lyon. 

The investigators of the Reggio Calabria Mobile Squad and the SCO - coordinated by the Deputy Prosecutor Giuseppe LOMBARDO and the Deputy Prosecutors Simona FERRAIUOLO and Alessandro MOFFA - provided their Spanish colleagues with significant elements on the presence in the Iberian Peninsula of ROMEO Giuseppe who had managed to escape from the execution of the international operation "European 'Ndrangheta Connection" carried out on December 5, 2018 by a Joint Investigation Team composed of several Italian Police Forces - State Police and Guardia di Finanza - and European (German BKA, Dutch FIOD and Belgian Police), with the coordination of Eurojust and Europol.

The arrest of ROMEO Giuseppe represents a moment of particular importance in the general activity of contrasting international drug trafficking managed by the 'Ndrangheta.

Affected by two precautionary custody orders in prison and the recipient of a preventive seizure decree as part of the "European 'Ndrangheta Connection" investigation, on 13 November 2020 he was sentenced by the Reggio Calabria GUP to 20 years of imprisonment for participation, with an important role, to a criminal association aimed at international drug trafficking, possession of narcotic substances, fraudulent transfer of values ​​and self-laundering.

Originally from San Luca (RC), aged 35, known by the nicknames "u pacciu", "maluferru" or "u nanu", ROMEO Giuseppe is the son of ROMEO Antonio born in 1947 alias "centocapelli", considered contiguous to the ROMEO clan intended "Detachments" of San Luca (RC), currently detained at the Parma Prison.

His role within one of the three factions that made up the vast criminal association disarticulated with the European 'Ndrangheta Connection operation, or the "PELLE-COSTADURA-ROMEO" group, was that of promoter, organizer and financier of cocaine trafficking in Europe. He had in fact established his home in Germany, but was commuting between Calabria, Lombardy and north-western Europe in order to make agreements with the suppliers of the drug and with some intermediaries residing in Belgium, Holland and Germany, who provided for the transport of 40 kg of cocaine a week from Holland to Milan, with the collaboration of other Calabrian associates, some of whom were already sentenced in the first instance to several years of imprisonment as a result of the trial resulting from the aforementioned police operation.

ROMEO Giuseppe was also convicted in the first instance of having fictitiously registered his shares in the bar - ice cream parlor "Cafè La Piazza" in Bruggen in Germany - seized during the same "European 'Ndrangheta Connection" operation - to other subjects accused in the same investigation , as well as for self-laundering and reuse of illicit proceeds in the aforementioned German business.

The fugitive was arrested in Spain in execution of a European Arrest Warrant issued in November 2018 by the GIP of Reggio Calabria at the request of the local DDA as part of the aforementioned international police operation.
