G7: Biden leads the new front against China

(by Andrea Pinto) The G7 marks a new course: all compact against China after the uncompromising stance announced by the US president. The beginning of the challenge, which will probably mark our next few years, is the request addressed to Beijing to clarify the origin of the virus that many claim to have escaped from the Wuhan laboratory. Biden at the end of May has also already asked US intelligence for a detailed report on the affair, by the beginning of next September, in order to then be able to express himself more fully on the origin of Covid.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the G7 countries have covertly asked WHO to launch a more in-depth investigation as soon as possible. The EU also reiterated the importance of knowing the origins of the virus and the need for "whoever conducts the investigation to have full access to information and places". In response to the new line Beijing has passed, in a few hours, a new law against the sanctions imposed by foreign countries which provides, among other things, "the refusal of a visa, the expulsion, the seizure and the freezing of or Chinese officials ".

Use central in the fight against vaccines. Biden after meeting with the British counterpart Boris Johnson said: "The United States will be the vaccine arsenal to fight Covid around the world, we have a plan to supply vaccines for everyone". It is therefore clear that the Americans want to enter as a leader in the global production and distribution chain of the rich opportunity given by the anti Covid vaccines.

Competition with China a. 360 °. To counter China in several areas, various initiatives are underway, such as talks between US trade representative Katherine Tai and Taiwanese minister John Deng to arrange a meeting of the Trade And Investment Framework Agreement Council. The main objective, but very difficult, is also to convince European leaders to cut ties with Beijing, despite the fact that the common economic interests are very consolidated and particularly advantageous. For example, Germany has the largest share of its export market in China. The same situation occurs for Italy. It is no coincidence that Biden decided to have, during the G7 talks, two separate meetings with Angela Merkel e Mario Draghi.

The position of the president of the EU Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen"China and Russia are of particular concern. The G7 is united and determined to protect and promote our values and strengthen multilateralism". A clear turnaround compared to the sumptuous trade agreement already signed between the EU and China. But, of course, the focus of the summit will also be the commitment to the environment. Leaders are seeking agreement on an ambitious plan to cut sales of gasoline and diesel cars and make them a minority compared to green vehicles such as electric by 2030.
