Iraq - Mosul, important road artery reopened thanks to Italian soldiers

The Iraqi security forces have reopened, after more than three years, the main road linking the city of Mosul with the neighboring province of Duhok, in the Autonomous Region of Iraqi Kurdistan.

As part of the process of normalization of the Mosul Dam area, the Italian military has assisted the Iraqi and Kurdish security forces in creating a security framework that would allow the population to be able to move freely again through the two provinces.

With the re-opening of the check points along the border of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region, in fact, thousands of families will be able to meet again after several years of separation, and the stabilization process can also develop on one of the main routes of Northern Iraq.

Closed at the end of the 2014, after the Iraqi and Kurdish forces had limited the expansion of Daesh, from the Ninewa Province (Mosul) to that of Duhok, the road remained inaccessible to transit through the Kurdish Defense Line which marked the main front defensive by the forces of the so-called Islamic state. However, its closure had prevented, for years, from maintaining relations between the two areas and in many cases, it no longer allowed the families to maintain relations, also influencing the economy of the area.

The reopening of the important road artery represents another important indicator of the improvement of the security situation in the area of the dam of Mosul and concretely depicts the important work done by the Italian soldiers who, in coordination with the Iraqi and Kurdish security forces, tangibly favored the process of normalization.

In this context, both the presence on the ground of our soldiers at the dam and the work done by the Army trainers which in recent years have transferred to the Iraqi and Kurdish army and police forces has proved to be of primary importance. the operational skills necessary to defeat ISIS and to return to a normal situation.
