Riyad Badran, special seats for Iraqi citizens displaced by the war with ISIS

Riyad Badran, head of the Central Electoral Commission, said special seats will be organized for Iraqi citizens still displaced by the war with ISIS to allow them to vote in the next parliamentary elections, scheduled for 12 May.

The decision was taken to reassure the Sunni parties who had unsuccessfully asked for a postponement of the consultation, fearing that the inhabitants of the majority Sunni areas, the most affected by the fighting, could not vote.

According to Badran, 1,6 million civilians are still displaced. “Special lists have been drawn up - said the head of the Electoral Commission - to allow them to take part in the elections. Special seats will be set up wherever there are displaced people ”.

Also according to Badran, so far are 278.000 displaced persons who have been registered to vote, of which 180.000 in the province of Nineveh, of which Mosul is the capital.
