Rohani meets Barzani: Iran supports a united Iraq

According to the Nova agency, Iran supports a united and integrated Iraq. This was stated today by the president of the Islamic Republic, Hassan Rohani, during a meeting in Tehran with the president of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, Nechirvan Barzani. According to the Iranian news agency "Irna", Rohani stressed that all the countries of the region and their ethnic groups have a duty to defend national sovereignty and borders.

With reference to Iraqi Kurdistan, the president of the Islamic Republic highlighted the importance of the region for Iraq, stating that no pretext can justify a threat to the stability and security of the region. Furthermore, Rohani said that all ethnic groups in the region must be able to enjoy their legitimate rights within the framework of respect for the Constitution and the borders of individual states.

For his part, Barzani said that both the federal government of Baghdad and the Kurdish regional executive confirm their commitment to respect the Iraqi Constitution. According to the provisions of the Constitutional Charter, Baghdad and Erbil intend to resolve the crisis arising from the referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Called by the Erbil authorities on 25 September 2017, the consultation was deemed invalid and unconstitutional by the Iraqi federal government, which adopted sanctions against the Kurdish executive. Addressing President Rohani, Barzani expressed his gratitude to Iran for the assistance provided to Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan in the fight against the Islamic State. The head of the Erbil government then assured the president of the Islamic Republic that the Kurdish region of Iraq will never be used to threaten Iran.
