USA: firing Mueller would provoke a constitutional crisis never seen before

American Democrats have warned President Donald Trump not to use the controversial Republican dossier against the FBI as a "pretext" to dismiss the special adviser investigating alleged Russian interference in the US elections.

A sizable number of Democratic lawmakers have warned President Trump that such an action could trigger a constitutional crisis not seen in the United States since Nixon's time.

In the intentions of the Republican party, the dossier should demonstrate that the FBI and the Justice Department have abused their authority in the investigation into Russian interference in the latest elections and possible collusion between the Kremlin and Trump's staff. For Trump and the Republicans, in short, it would be an investigation vitiated from the beginning by a prejudice against the president and the Grand Old Party, aimed at favoring the Democrats.

According to the BBC, the Democrats explained that the release of the report aims to stop investigations into the alleged links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. President Trump has consistently denied any such connection. The report - in their view - is in particular a "shameful attempt to discredit" the FBI and the investigation into Russian interference. In a statement, Senate Minority Leaders Chuck Schumer and House Minority Nancy Pelosi and eight other senior Democrats warned Trump of the temptation to fire Special Adviser Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

"We write to inform you that we would consider it as an unjustified action, an attempt to obstruct justice in the investigation of Russia", reads the statement, which underlines that such an action could result in a constitutional crisis never seen in years '70, when President Richard Nixon ordered the sacking of the justice officials involved in the Watergate scandal.
