USA optimistic about talks with North Korea

The United States stresses the importance of resuming talks with North Korea.

This was stated by US Undersecretary of State Stephen Biegun, who closed the three days of talks in Seoul.

The office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in reported that "Biegun stressed the importance of reopening dialogue with North Korea". Biegun, a US envoy to induce North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, met with South Korea's National Security Advisor Suh Hoon.

South Korea tried to promote peace efforts and Suh helped organize the summits between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump and Kim met for the first time in 2018 in Singapore, giving hope for a conclusion of the negotiations on North Korea's nuclear program. But their second summit, which took place in Vietnam in 2019, did not lead to any agreement thus disappointing expectations.

Trump on Tuesday announced that he was open to another meeting with Kim and thought it might be useful, Voice of America said, citing a transcript of Trump's interview with Gray Television, which airs next Sunday.
