Hong Kong International Airport, one of the busiest in the world, relies on Leonardo's baggage handling technology

Leonardo's baggage handling technology was chosen for Terminal 1 of Hong Kong International Airport. The “Primary Sorter Replacement” program, launched by the Asian airport, provides for the replacement of the current primary sorting machines with tilt-tray technology with Leonardo's innovative MBHS® (Multi-sorting Baggage Handling System) system. The company will be responsible for project management and design, manufacturing, delivery, installation and testing of the new cross-belt sorters and all related hardware and software components.
In 2018, the Asian hub served over 74,7 million passengers to 220 destinations, earning an excellent reputation in baggage reclaiming and winning important awards, partly due to the adoption of new and advanced technologies: "Airport of the Year 2018 ”(International Airport Review) and Best Airport in China 2018 (Business Traveler China Awards). To meet the rigorous standards of the airport, Leonardo will supply four MBHS® crossbelt sorting machines, 1 inductions and 18 barcode reading stations with radio frequency identification (RFID) capabilities for Terminal 14.
Leonardo will integrate the new project with existing IT systems at the airport, ensuring continuity of services. Peculiarities of the solution will be the variable speed control to optimize the baggage flow, the ability to dynamically re-center the position of the baggage on the sorter, the full control of the loading and unloading trajectories and the ability to manage all types of baggage, including the out of standard, ie objects of considerable or bulky size.
Leonardo is one of the leading integrators of baggage handling systems, which see MBHS® as one of the leading technologies. The company has achieved a leadership position in the international market for baggage handling systems, with solutions supplied to some of the major airports including Rome Fiumicino, Zurich, Geneva, Paris Orly, Lyon, Mulhouse, Athens and other hubs in Europe, as well as Kuwait International Airport and others in the Middle East and Asia.
Leonardo's MBHS® system is certified and approved by BNP Associates Inc., one of the largest air transport consulting companies.
