Diplomacy failed in Libya, now "boots on the ground"

(by Andrea Pinto) Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi's son, initially expelled from the electoral competition, was then readmitted to the list of candidates in the elections scheduled for tomorrow and postponed, according to the words of the UN special envoy, Stephanie Williams, to the end of next January.

The Electoral Commission had excluded him but subsequently the judiciary, with final judgment, reinserted him in the competition because there is no Constitutional Court in Libya.

We find the current provisional premier opposed to Saif  Dbeibah and the general Kalifa Haftar who fear a return of the dynasty that managed to keep Libya united, ensuring almost half a century of internal stability. A family, among other things, much loved by the people.

Beyond the cumbersome presence of Saif al Islam, however, the preparatory stages for the elections had already shown irremediable flaws, there was still no official list of candidates, let alone the ballot papers.

Apparently the knot is the son of Gaddafi but there are other factors that hinder the democratic process desired for the country by the UN and European countries, Italy in the lead. There are still insurmountable territorial rifts between Tripolitania and Cyrenaica not to mention the eternal rivalries within each tribal camp.

To benefit from this disorder are the militias still present on the field of Turkey and Russia which despite the calls to withdraw from the international community are still there, ready to support and not only with weapons the various factions that today divide Libya. .

What is certain is that in Ankara and Moscow the situation is very convenient, so they are able to continue in their trades, acquiring day by day more and more credit and influence among the various tribes scattered in the varied landscape of the Libyan territory, the real backbone of the stability of the tormented country. North African.

The UN, Europe and the United States have blatantly failed their diplomatic work if they fail to lead the Libyan people to peaceful democratic elections. If this does not happen quickly, the only way will be to put "the boots on the ground" under the umbrella of a "convinced" UN resolution. In the course of 2022, therefore, a new front could open up in Libya and considering the Quirinale Treaty it is not excluded that Italy and France, given their common interests (migration control and hydrocarbon extraction with Eni and Total), could be the promoters of an EU-led or bilateral military mission as is taking place in the Sahel, with the tacit approval of the USA.
