Leonardo is strengthened in airport logistics with a new contract with Frankfurt airport

Leonardo strengthens its leadership in the airport logistics sector with a contract to supply a baggage handling system (Baggage Handling System - BHS) for the international airport of Frankfurt am Main, the first hub in Germany and third in Europe with approximately 70 million passengers in 2019.

In detail, Leonardo is responsible for the overall management of the project, from the design to the baggage handling integration for the new pier G of Terminal 3, currently under construction. Once operational, the pier will initially support a capacity of approximately 5 million passengers per year.

The company will provide a complete solution equipped with an integrated sorting system with advanced security features. In a first phase, by 2021, the delivery and installation of the "stand alone" BHS is expected. The expansion of the plant and its integration with the airport's overall baggage handling system are subsequently planned.

Two MBHS® (Multi-sorting Baggage Handling System) cross-belt sorters will be built in Frankfurt, featuring state-of-the-art technology, low energy consumption and easy maintenance, around 40 check-in stations, baggage carousels on arrival and all subsystems for the transport of baggage and for security checks, in compliance with the international reference standards. In addition, the software components for the control of the system and for the management of the sorting towards the boarding destinations will be provided.

Frankfurt am Main airport joins customers who have already chosen Leonardo's baggage logistics solutions, including Rome Fiumicino, Geneva, Paris Orly, Lyon, Zurich and other hubs in Europe, as well as Kuwait City, Hong- Kong and others in the Middle East and Asia.
