Libya: Erdogan in Tunis for a political change while Haftar places an ultimatum

The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan he asked, during a visit to Tunisia to allow Tunis, Algeria and Qatar to be part of the Berlin conference on the Libya dossier to be held on 14-15 January 2020.

Erdogan added, in a joint press conference with Tunisian President Kais Saied, that he is certain that Tunis will provide valuable assistance in the efforts to stabilize Libya.

Erdogan then specified: "In Libya awe are dealing with the legitimate government whose head is Fayez Al-Sarraj, while Khalifa Haftar is dealing with countries that support him with weapons and money".

Erdogan also said that there are already 5000 Sudanese mercenaries on the ground in addition to the Russian troops (private group Wagner). Their presence is illegal as Haftar's forces are illegitimate.

"We cannot leave our Libyan brothers under the clutches of Haftar". Erdogan then said that Ankara wants to resolve the Libyan crisis through an inter-Libyan dialogue and that he has discussed forms of cooperation with Saied to reach a ceasefire in Libya and a return to the political process.

Saied, meanwhile, said the memorandum of understanding on maritime cooperation between Libya and Turkey does not include Tunisian waters, adding that he discussed with Erdogan the initiative proposed by Tunis to resolve the conflict in Libya. In this regard, the adviser to the Tunisian presidency Rachida Al-Nefer had already declared last Saturday that the Tunisian president would have activated an important initiative to resolve the Libyan crisis.

High Russian delegate talks about Haftar's progress on the ground

The head of the Russian contact group on conflict settlement in Libya, Lev Dengov, told Sputnik that Khalifa Haftar's statements about the front-line advancement of the Tripoli war are not supported by tangible results on the ground.

Dengov added that Russia has seen Haftar very active in the past three days: he would give an ultimatum to the Misrata brigades located in Tripoli.

"Haftar understands that Misrata is protecting western Libya, but three days after the first ultimatum, he has granted another three days, which means he is not advancing." Dengov added.

Haftar's spokesman, Ahmed Al-Mismari, said on Sunday that they had given three more days for the Misrata brigades to leave Tripoli. The deadline ends on Wednesday.

On Friday, Al-Mismari also confirmed that airstrikes on Misrata will continue on a daily basis if the armed factions do not leave Tripoli and Sirte. Misrata responded to these threats by announcing the full mobilization of its men, also stating that there is no delegation engaged in talks with Haftar.

The situation on the Libyan sea

The commander of the Naval Force of Operation "Volcano of Anger" Rida Issa said he had sent over 370 surveillance patrols in recent months.

Issa added that the patrols were tasked with gathering information on the movement of the ships, claiming to have identified a group that was trying to carry out military missions in the ports of Al-Zawiya and Tripoli.

Issa also pointed out that Naval Force patrols have intercepted several foreign warships and submarines, including one located in Sirte and warships off Misrata, as well as an electronic warship from a country supporting Haftar. .

Meanwhile, Issa said the signing of the MoU between Turkey and Libya does not constitute a violation of Libyan sovereignty or any other country.

He said the Memorandum of Understanding is returning more than 16.000 square kilometers of sea that was previously under the control of other countries to Libya, saying Naval Force personnel are ready to defend Libyan resources.
