Computerization in Healthcare is necessary, strategic and imminent

(by Giancarlo De Leo, Consultant in Medical-Scientific Publishing and Digital Health, Member and Secretary of the Digital Health Observatory of the Italian Digital Revolution- AIDR Association) The incessant scientific, technical and organizational development initially linked to the revolution in the field of digital technologies and subsequently to the thrust of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have forced health services to adapt their systems to what are new in the sector and as the demand for health professionals changes.

Tools and resources have been put in place to deal with the health emergency, defining useful "needs" in the daily working life of our professionals, which can be summarized in a few key words: safety, speed, traceability, transparency, statistics, ecology, integration and simplicity ; it is with computerization in all possible sectors of activity that these needs are met and the answer is in the transformation that occurs following the adoption of IT means.

The introduction of dynamic, flexible, "young" computer systems capable of simplifying bureaucracy and spreading the culture of health means, for the health professional, gaining time thus having the opportunity to focus more on the most interesting and stimulating aspects of its assistance, teaching and research activities.

You need software that integrates the different stages of the different processes in a single system and that responds to needs such as:

  • the security of data that must be replicated and travel on secure communication channels (https); always be updated in real time and respond to the rules on privacy and the processing of personal data
  • the speed of connections, executions, results, updates including regulations and their application, real time in communications via e-mail and messaging applications of daily use
  • the traceability of the activities of the system and of those who work on it
  • the transparency of the activities of the system and of those who work there
  • statistics, all the information entered must be able to be subject to on-line statistical analysis
  • ecology, dematerialisation for the environmental sustainability of our system but also the speed of the systems is ecology as well as the connections
  • integration with systems already present in the Company and with third-party systems
  • ease of use, consistency of operation and complete compliance with "web customs", use of the Web Browser without installing any other program or plug-in

From this reflection on the learnings that can be drawn from the pandemic for the present and for the future, the need clearly emerges not to let go of what has been obtained and learned but to make it develop, grow and… multiply!

Why is computerization in healthcare important?

Because it is a necessary condition for a whole series of services that we have already learned to use such as video calls or teleconferences, teleworking, telemedicine, for those that have already been designed by third parties but implemented in the company and for those that we could still develop.

Some examples?

For the Administrative area: Innovate the governance of training

To maintain high quality standards, a structured investment in the development of human resources cannot be ignored, in particular the development of the skills and knowledge of each operator.

It is possible to integrate in a single system the different stages of training for the processes of:

  • Management
  • Organization
  • Delivery

with systems usable from the WEB and that communicate in real time via e-mail and messaging applications.

For the Surgical area: Remote robotic surgery on 5G network

Surgeons, through remote robotic surgery on 5G network, equipped with very low latency, ultra-wide band and high reliability of 5G, will be able to operate the robot and manipulating pliers remotely, while receiving a stereoscopic video of the intervention area; this will remove geographic barriers for a faster and safer sharing of medical knowledge on an ever larger scale. 5G will make it possible to increase the speed with which data can be uploaded and downloaded, to make the connection more immediate and also to connect PCs and smartphones of learners present at the same time in the same area, who will then be able to follow the intervention "in Live".

For the Clinical and Research area: 3D printing

The implementation of 3D printing for educational purposes, for the creation of detailed models of parts of the human body, in order to give the clinician the possibility of having a "replica", identical in size and geometry to the part of the body being trained , on which it is possible to deepen specific anatomical aspects and simulate the activities in advance.

Innovative and useful technologies to all our professionals for a new and resilient healthcare.
