Lucca: Condom in the hospital dinner tray

A patient admitted to the OP (brief intensive observation), last night, found a condom in the dinner tray served in the bedroom. The news was reported by the Adnkronos agency. The woman immediately alerted the nursing staff who reported the incident to the Usl Toscana North West Company. The police are investigating the case. For the ASL it would be "a malicious act": the presence of condom in the cup with cooked apples it would have been "a sabotage". In early September, a patient was given a slice of bread with mold in the same hospital in Lucca. The ASL, informs a note, formally asked the dealer to start the procedure for "substantial and complete review of the fostering of the catering service" following "a serious violation of the management specifications that occurred last night with the delivery of dinner food ". Following the notification by the patient and the staff of the department, the hospital's health management "proceeded to activate the immediate verification and control procedures to reconstruct the route, from the delivery of the raw material to the distribution in the department". The verifications concerned the internal traceability of the cooking center, the monitoring of the automatic transport system and the accesses to the department involved.

The carabinieri of Lucca intervened in the hospital, who are carrying out the in-depth analysis of the case, "given also the recurrence of the episodes and the unmistakable malicious act of tampering / sabotage that occurred": once the person responsible for the gesture was identified, the ASL will become a civil party.

While awaiting the outcome of the investigations, extraordinary security measures and the review of the execution of the catering service were requested from the service provider under concession. The supervision of health personnel at the food distribution stage was also strengthened in order to ensure that food delivery procedures are carried out correctly.

The violation, the ASL informs, has therefore been "immediately challenged to the concessionaire, who must obviously supervise both the quality of the services rendered by its providers and the safety of the journey in order to avoid such incidents".

The same thing had been done for a previous case (dating back to 8 September) linked to the presence of mold on a slice of packaged bread and delivered to a patient from the Lucca hospital.

On that occasion the hospital management had made an inspection to check the kitchens, as well as sending a formal warning to the company in charge of providing the service. From the inspection carried out on the food present in the cooking center, no discrepancies emerged, however a revision of the food control and traceability procedures had been requested.

In addition to routine checks, which were already carried out consistently, additional checks had been initiated, aimed at guaranteeing ever greater safety and quality of the service rendered to users, and finally notified the ASL.
