The award ceremony for the winners of the XXXVII edition of the Mathematics Olympics took place online on Saturday 15 May.
941 schools from all over Italy and the rest of the world took part in the initiative (including the Italian school in Athens and the one in New York). About 60.000 female students participating in the individual competition at the level of the Institute (the Archimedes Games), which took place via a telematic platform.
After the first two selection phases, 301 students were invited to the national final, which took place on May 6, in 95 locations in Italy (and in the Italian school in New York, as well as in Canada, where a student was present for a cultural exchange).
The national test consists of 6 problems to be solved by finding for each the proof of a mathematical statement: each solution has been evaluated by assigning it a score from 0 to 7 points. Two finalists totaled 42 points, the full score. 38 girls participated, a figure which constitutes a small record, being the highest ever recorded for this initiative.
The Mathematics Olympics are organized by the Italian Mathematical Union, with the support of the Ministry of Education, to spread mathematical culture and a playful and fun approach to the discipline, without however trivializing its contents.
Starting from the results of the national competitions, the Olympic Commission of the Italian Mathematical Union organizes training and selection stages for the participation of the national representation in international mathematics competitions. Recently, in September 2020, the Italian team achieved its best result in history, finishing sixth in the world race (organized by Russia) out of 105 participating nations, not far from the podium, occupied by China, Russia and the United States.
In addition to the individual competition, the finals of the two team competitions were held on 6 May. In this type of competition 7 pupils from the same school had to solve a list of 20 exercises by collaborating with each other, in a maximum time of 2 hours.
