Moscow says no to the UN peace mission in the east of Ukraine

The president of the Russian Senate, Valentina Matvienko, said that Russia is opposed to the US proposal for a UN peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine, controlled by pro-Russian separatists and not seeing any logic.

Yesterday in Kiev, the representative of the US State Department for Ukraine, Kurt Walker, reiterated his proposal defending the idea of an international peace mission with wide-ranging powers that affects the entire conflict zone, including the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Moscow has agreed to a UN mission dedicated only to ensure the work of the OSCE observers (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) that extends along the line that separates the forces of Kiev from the pro-Russian rebels: " It is a question of deploying the negotiators along the line of contact only after the withdrawal of heavy weapons to put an end to the armed clashes and guarantee the safety of OSCE personnel ”.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Foreign Ministry to propose a peacekeeping mission for eastern Ukraine to the UN Security Council, on condition that the deployment of forces be negotiated with the leaders of the separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk but Kurt Walker rejected the proposal, replying that he has no intention of negotiating with the rebels, because they are believed to obey Moscow.
