Dense fog in the Quirinale match, the solution with the candidacy of a woman?

The convocation of Parliament in joint session for the election of the new Head of State will arrive tomorrow, January 4, by the President of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, considering that Sergio Mattarella took office on February 3, 2015. Based on thearticle 85 of the Constitution, indeed, "thirty days before the deadline ''of the seven-year,''' the president of the Chamber of Deputies convenes the Parliament and the regional delegates in joint session to elect the new President of the Republic".

It will thus be known precisely when the voting will begin. "There are a lot of precedents and the general situation, we look at them and I will decide the date“, Fico announced in mid-December, meeting journalists for the end of the year wishes. And precisely on the basis of practice and precedents the session should be scheduled around January 20.

The game for the Quirinale, however, is still open, no certainty has leaked from the party headquarters. While Mario Draghi, at the year-end conference he said he was "a grandfather at the service of institutions ", Silvio Berlusconi, for a few weeks he has even defined himself as "a great grandfather ", so much so that at the last summit of the center-right he said he was sure he had the numbers to win: he spoke of 150 votes to be added to those that the center-right already has, excluding any possible ambush that comes from inside part of the so-called snipers.

That of Draghi and Berlusconi are two different and opposing figures and in both cases they would cause considerable political shocks. Draghi is the shared candidate who could hoard votes across the board, even intercepting those of the Brothers of Italy. The Knight, on the other hand, would be the candidate of a part of the center-right possibly supported by external voters, centrists or perhaps from the Mixed, writes the Ansa.

The election of Draghi, however, would involve the need to find another premier of international standing, able to keep intact the already fragile balance of the current majority. Nobody wants to go back to the polls before the natural end of the legislature scheduled for March 2023, except for the Brothers of Italy. For this reason, the Democratic Party hopes that the two paths, that of the election for the Hill and that of the government, go forward together. Enrico Letta, who has continuous contacts with Mario Draghi, has for some time been aiming not to wear down the figure of the premier, hoping for a broad agreement in favor of a non-divisive personality, Super partes, as was widely hoped for by President Mattarella himself in his end-of-year speech.

In the center-right in the face of Berlusconi's willingness to run there is not a few internal resistance. Mariastella Gelmini reiterates that it is difficult to replace Draghi at Palazzo Chigi, while Maurizio Gasparri agrees with D'Alema against "the commissioner of politics " represented by the election of Draghi al Colle.

The premises made on these two figures extend to the search for a different, independent and third one Super partes maybe even a woman, like Cartabia, which President Mattarella himself likes very much.
