New case of listeria, recall of “Capricciosa mixed salad” lots. After minestrone and frozen foods, another precautionary measure

After the frozen vegetables, also the salad. A new recall from the trade due to the risk of contamination from Listeria has in fact been published on the website of the Ministry of Health: this time it is two lots of the "Mixed Capricciosa Salad" under the FIRST brand and marketed by L'Alco Grandi Magazzini spa via Grandi n 20 Brescia and the recall is on a "precautionary" basis due to the "possible presence" of the bacterium. For this reason, citizens are advised not to consume the product and bring it back to the point of sale.

The recall concerns the “Mixed salad Capricciosa 150g, lots 15L6M255 and 16L6M255 with expiry 22 and 23/01/2019 under the FIRST brand, produced by Facchini srl in the Poncarale company at via Martiri Della Libertà n 23. As a precaution, the Ministry of Health recommends not to consume salads with marked batch numbers. It is yet another recall in Italy - after Freshona frozen vegetables, Findus soups and a batch of Pinguin brand frozen vegetable mixes - due to the European outbreak of listeriosis which has caused 2015 cases since 47, 9 of which fatal. In Italy, however, there is currently no alarm situation as, as already assured by the Minister of Health Giulia Grillo, in our country there are "very few" lots of frozen vegetables at risk.

Now, however, the danger of contamination also extends to non-frozen products: for this reason, asks Giovanni D'Agata, president of the "Rights Desk", against the danger of listeria "it is necessary to immediately introduce the obligation of the label of origin , to protect consumers in a situation that today sees two out of three products sold in Italy from abroad, but also to remove the secrecy on trade flows with the public indication of companies that import products to allow rapid and targeted interventions. Listeriosis, the Higher Institute of Health explains on its website, is an infection caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, generally due to the ingestion of contaminated food, and can take on different clinical forms, from acute febrile gastroenteritis to the invasive form.

Pregnant women usually have a flu-like syndrome, and infections acquired during pregnancy can have serious consequences for the fetus. In immuno-compromised adults and the elderly, listeriosis can cause meningitis, encephalitis, severe septicemia. These clinical manifestations are treatable with antibiotics, but the prognosis in severe cases is often poor. The average incubation is 3 weeks, but can last up to 70 days.
