This morning, at dawn, the State Police carried out, between Lazio and Calabria, precautionary measures, preventive seizures and house searches against subjects seriously suspected of belonging to a criminal association dedicated to the illicit traffic of waste, other crimes against the environment and fraud against the state.
The head of the organization, a Calabrian subject in the past already hit by two anti-mafia prohibitions, was sentenced to custody in prison, while seven associates were subjected to house arrest and two to the ban on entrepreneurial activities.
The investigation - coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Rome and conducted by the Central Operational Service, by the Flying Squad of the Latina Police Headquarters and by the Traffic Police Department for Lazio - originated from the Acea Ambiente complaint against a company in Ariccia that was awarded the contract. of a tender for the assignment of the loading, transport and disposal of liquid waste produced in the local unit of Acea Ambiente in Aprilia.
The company in charge should have transported the sewage to authorized landfills for disposal procedures, the investigative elements acquired instead lead us to believe that the company spilled liquid waste on land or in sewer wells of the public network, without prior treatment, by putting waste identification (FIR) false stamps of the companies authorized to dispose of sewage, in order to certify the “waste cycle” and obtain payments for the services from Acea Ambiente.
The investigated company had also won other public contracts with local Roman authorities, including the one for the disposal of sewage from the Roma Capitoline fields.
The investigation then provided elements for the further challenge to the suspects of the crimes of fictitious registration of assets and self-laundering: it is believed that the huge flows of capital deriving from the illicit trafficking of waste have been reused in legal economic circuits.
The State Police, during the operation, carried out preventive seizures for about 3 million euros.
