European Week for the Reduction of Waste, registrations are open

(by Alberto Azario Pres. Green Holding spa) With the motto "the best waste is not produced!" from 17 to 25 November 2018 will take place the tenth edition of the "European Week for Waste Reduction" (in Italy better known as "SERR "Ie European Week for the Reduction of Waste), an environmental communication campaign that has the primary objective of raising the awareness of as many actors as possible on the strategies and policies of waste prevention outlined by the European Union and that the Member States are called to implement, promote and reward, moreover, concrete and creative actions that have as their objective the effective reduction of waste. The protection of the environmental heritage begins, in fact, from individual daily gestures and from the commitment of the entire community.

Born under the LIFE + program of the European Commission, this year's edition will focus mainly on the prevention and management of hazardous waste since, according to data from the EEA (European Environment Agency), each European citizen generates 200 kg of hazardous waste per year: we are talking about 100 million tons, and a fifth of these are produced at home. And unfortunately, even today, most people ignore that dangerous substances can be found, in small or large quantities, in many products of daily use such as cosmetics, batteries, paints, light bulbs and in general WEEE, or waste from electrical and electronic equipment. These wastes represent a risk to the environment and human health more than others. For this reason it becomes very important to eliminate or at least reduce as much as possible the quantity of dangerous substances present in these products, both those used by industry in their own processes, and those with which we come into contact as consumers. The peculiarity of the weekly event is also that each object, whether individual or collective, can join the campaign through the so-called "actions" .Italy, following the growing success of the European initiative, last year was reconfirmed the top nations in Europe thanks to the number of 4.422 shares. As already mentioned, those of this year will have to be inspired by the prevention of the production of waste that contains within them harmful properties for the environment and for the health of individuals and animals, such as explosive, flammable and / or toxic substances. Particular waste that, even if properly conferred, must undergo a different treatment process compared to the others.

Involving public administrations, associations and non-profit organizations as much as possible, the world of schools and that of businesses and individual citizens, to propose actions to prevent, reduce or recycle waste correctly is once again the objective to be followed inspiration of the 3R principle:

Reduce: This topic concerns activities to raise awareness on the urgency of reducing the amount of waste we produce, giving advice to avoid or reduce the production of waste upstream. It also covers actions aimed at changing consumer behavior, promoting the inclusion of sustainability aspects in the various purchasing decisions.

Reuse: This theme covers activities designed to remind participants that products may have a second life, to promote the repair or reuse of products instead of buying new ones and to encourage the donation of products that are no longer needed.

Recycle: This theme covers activities designed to help people improve their behavior with respect to separate collection, for example by explaining how to close the material resource cycle, encouraging people to throw their waste into the appropriate container or organizing visits to facilities for selection and recycling.

«This year the SERR has reached the tenth year, ten years of actions to prevent waste that have involved all of Europe in an extraordinary project of participation. Italy has always distinguished itself, the number of actions from the bottom of its Project Developer was almost always the highest, demonstrating the great attention to the theme and the great will to contribute to the protection of the planet. Also this year everyone can participate, in an associated or single form, to bring a concrete message to those around us, hoping that from below it will reach those who define the rules. The tenth anniversary will also be a party we are organizing together with the National Promoting Committee, as well as a moment of launch and reflection for the future of the project. For details, you can go to the Ecomondo press conference and in the meantime join the EWWR and send us your proposals for action "declared Emanuela Rosio, president of AICA (International Association for Environmental Communication). Further information on the previous editions is available on the Italian SERR website, www.menorifiuti.org, and to participate actively you can register on www.ewwr.eu, registering your action from Saturday 1 September to Wednesday 31 October .
