Admiral of Mare nostrum: "Humanitarian corridors, not NGOs"

Not a new edition of Mare Nostrum, but the opening of humanitarian corridors to save those fleeing from wars and persecutions, as well as measures to allow Libya to recover the political stability necessary to stop the migration phenomenon.

To say it is the admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, former Chief of Staff of the Navy and responsible for the mission Mare Nostrum launched in 2013 by the Letta government precisely to deal with the emergency immigration and the dead at sea.

“The conditions have changed, that mission would no longer be possible”, says the admiral. We have another situation from an operational point of view. The objective of that device, which intervened in the Lampedusa area 60 miles from Libyan waters, was humanitarian to prevent the boats from sinking causing hundreds of victims. Other objectives were the arrest of smugglers, addressing health problems in time and reporting migrants who disembark.

Now, however, with the code signed between non-governmental organizations and Viminale, the situation is different: migrants are not rescued when they arrive, but they already know that starting - even in precarious conditions - will be rescued and rescued as soon as they leave Libyan waters: " Now the Ong, positioning themselves near the Libyan coast, create a different situation ", says De Giorgi," Migrants venture out knowing that they will find who will take them to safety ".

Moreover, for the admiral it is necessary to "distinguish the rescue at sea, which must always be guaranteed, from the destination of those who are rescued". "It must not be automatic that the people rescued are brought to the country of the ship that made the rescue," he warns, "The international conventions have been designed for shipwrecks in transit and not for a migration exodus of this magnitude. It is necessary to organize humanitarian corridors with the surveillance of Italy and other European countries and help Libya to restore political stability. We must make agreements and guarantee asylum to applicants who are entitled ".
