The 9th edition of the Shipping and the Law international conference starts in Naples: “The Shock of the New”. The leaders of the world, European and Italian shipowners' organizations will meet tomorrow 10 October and the day after tomorrow XNUMX October in Naples, at the historic Sala dei Baroni of the 'Maschio Angioino' to discuss the future scenarios of the maritime industry. Among the numerous participants will be the leaders of the shipping associations: the president Esben Poulsson and the vice president Emanuele Grimaldi of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the world meeting of shipowners; the president elect of the European Community Shipowners Associations (ECSA) and exponent of the Stena Claes Berglund group, the German Thomas Rehder and the former president of the Greek and European shipowners John Lyras; the president of Confitarma Mario Mattioli and that of the Young Shipowners Group Giacomo Gavarone. "The shock of the new" is in fact the title chosen for the ten-year anniversary of Shipping and the Law by Francesco S. Lauro, maritime lawyer and creator of the event: "The issues that will be discussed in these two days - underlines Lauro - are numerous and of great impact. From the evolution of political equilibriums and structures to the new protectionist barriers that characterize international scenarios. THE WORKS OF THE CONFERENCE

Wednesday 9 October The works will open on Wednesday 9 October and, after the introduction by Francesco S. Lauro "Innovating in a Time of Flux" and the institutional greetings of the mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris, will be followed by a scenario report by the vice president of the Istituto Affari Internazionali, former Chief of Staff for Defense, General Vincenzo Camporini, who will deal with the international geopolitical balances "evolution or revolution?" Subsequently ICS president Esben Poulsson will go into the details of the technological scenario that awaits us with a speech on the fourth revolution of propulsion ("The Shock of the New: The 4th Propulsion Tevolution"). The focus will then be brought back to the sector, first in Europe, with the intervention of Clas Berglund, president-elect of the European shipowners' association, who will deliver a report on the new global political landscape and its effects on shipping and trade ("New Global Political Landscape Effects on Shipping and Trade from an EU Perspective "), then touches the Italian horizon with the intervention of the president of Confitarma Mario Mattioli, who will analyze the shock of the new according to the perspectives of the trade association. But a look to the future comes in particular from the young owners, represented by Giacomo Gavarone, whose speech will close the first session. In the session "THe Shock of the New in Ship Finance" the financial aspects will be analyzed with the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Global Head Italian Infrastructure, Vincenzo Ercole Salazar Sarsfield, the owners Giuseppe Bottiglieri and Peppino D'Amato, the past president of Confitarma Nicola Coccia and the CEO of Venice Shipping and Logistics Fabrizio Vettosi, in a round table moderated by the economist Arturo Capasso. On Wednesday afternoon 9 the analysis will expand and we will try to answer the question: "What will it be?", About how the world will be and shipping in 2030 (and beyond). The session will see the introductory reports of the political scientist prof. Roberto D'Alimonte, who will discuss the challenges facing liberal democracies in the coming years, the Oxford University futurologist Hamish McRae, who will talk about what the world economy could look like in 2030 and the marine chief commercial officer RINA Paolo Moretti, who will describe what are expected to be new technologies in 2030 (“The Shock of the New: Shipping 4.0”). In the round table there will be: the president Esben Poulsson and the vice president of the International Chamber of Shipping Emanuele Grimaldi, the president elect of the European Community Shipowners Associations (ECSA) Claes Berglund (Stena), the ECSA past presidents John Lyras and Thomas Rehder, the president of Confitarma Mario Mattioli and the head of the think tank of the former oil minister of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Yamani, Leonidas P. Drollas. Speakers: The Standard Club UK managing director James Bean; the shipowner Mariella Bottiglieri; the president and CEO of PL Ferrari & Co. Thursday 10 October "The Shock of the New: Maritime infrastructure fit for the future": the second day of work will open with a reflection on the future of port infrastructure, with speeches by Francesco di Majo, president of the Central Tyrrhenian Authority -north, by Pietro Spirito, president of the Central Tyrrhenian Authority and Umberto Masucci, president of F2i Holding Portuale. The final session, "The shock of the new, legal responses: AI, future fuels, Brexit and others" will examine the legal evolutions of the sector but also the problems connected with the imminent turning point of the Sulfur Cap, the limit on sulfur emissions launched by the International Maritime Organization and that ships will have to comply from January 2020. The topic will be introduced by a keynote speech by prof. Mans Jacobsson, historic director of International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Funds, which will address the issue of legal challenges posed by unmanned ships.
