Pasticcio Italia, concern of the US and the EU. Comments in the international press

(by Andrea Pinto) Italy and its government crisis in the dark worries the chancelleries of half the world. The United States and the European Union are watching the Italian situation very carefully after the latest events in the Chamber which, almost for certain, give rise to the early dissolution of the Chambers by President Mattarella who, without carrying out the consultations, could then decide to call in advance the upcoming elections, scheduled between 2 and 9 October.

What is certain is that a government crisis in this difficult moment could only happen in our country thanks to a mediocre political class, not very attentive and able to send even a personality like Mario Draghi who, for his part, has done wrong, in my humble opinion, to accept the government office in front of a cosmic emptiness intellectual, made up of most of our current MPs.

Leaving the country in "sight-seeing" during an unprecedented international crisis between energy emergency, war in Ukraine, surge in inflation and the need not to lose the challenge of an ambitious PNRR, does not do honor to those who triggered the conditions (M5S ) to encourage the hardening of spirits among the different souls of the already botched parliamentary majority.

"The ballet of the irresponsible against Draghi can cause a perfect storm ", underlines Paolo Gentiloni in a very harsh tweet, adding that "now it's time to love Italy ". "Difficult months await us but we are a great country“, Is the only message of optimism from the EU Commissioner for the Economy.

Also from Brussels, the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament points the finger at the "populists, together with the popular party, who are responsible for the crisis", writes President Iratxe Garcia Perez.

The Commission does not officially comment, but refers to the close ties between Draghi and Von der Leyen that it had underlined no later than a few days ago. Even from the United States, even without wanting to comment on domestic political issues, in "respect" for Italian decisions, the White House makes it known that "The partnership with Italy is strong and we will continue to collaborate closely on a series of priority issues, including support for Ukraine against Russia's aggression".

But it is no mystery that even in Washington there is anxiety about what is happening in Rome. Joe Biden, already during the first tear of M5s, he had stressed to feed "Great respect and consideration for Draghi".

More direct are the international media, in whose analyzes the feeling that Italy is about to take a leap into the void by torpedoing a strong leader appreciated by all the allied chancelleries shines through. There BBC notes how "the third largest economy in the EU now seems destined for early elections ", with the effect of "delay the much needed reforms, as well as the approval of next year's budget". The British broadcaster recalls if it were needed that Italy "is the main recipient of grants and loans from the Recovery Fund, and the next part of the aid will depend on a series of reforms".

Secondo Le Monde, "whatever the outcome of this Italian political soap opera, the rating agency Fitch believes it is a symptom of great political uncertainty, even if early elections are avoided, making structural and fiscal reforms even more difficult". While in the markets the possibility of Draghi going away "reignited fears of a surge in the spread, which could prove explosive for the eurozone".

From the USA the The Washington Post notes that what happened in Rome "ended a period of relative political unity and destabilized the third largest economy in the European Union, of which Draghi was widely regarded as a guarantor, as well as of the government's international reputation. But the political parties, one after the other, today decided that Italy would be better off with something else".
