Pentagon Leaks: Teixeira risks up to 15 years

Accused of violating the espionage law, he faces up to 15 years in prison. The suspect is Jack Teixeira, the soldier of the American National Guard with access to classified information, suspected of having disseminated documents and images online, embarrassing the American intelligence apparatus. Enlisted in 2019, he worked as an IT and communications specialist at the Cap Code base and as of 2021 had the clearance to access the Pentagon's internal computer network for top secret information, called Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (jwics).

Teixeira first copied the classified documents in his possession, then began taking them home to photograph them because he feared being caught transcribing papers at work. A circumstance that contrasts with what was reported to the media by members of his chat, according to which the airman - indicated by the code name OG - had started publishing photos of the documents because he was annoyed that the other users (a total of 24, including some Russians and Ukrainians) did not take it seriously.

Furthermore, after the first press revelations, the young man looked for the word 'leak' in a classified system, in an attempt - according to the FBI - to find information on the ongoing investigation. The profile of a patriotic young man emerges from the media, a devout Catholic, racist and anti-Semitic, fanatic of weapons, doubtful of the future of America and anti 'deep state', who perhaps out of egocentrism and vanity just wanted to give "a taste of real war" to his fellow online war games.

The day after the arrest in the house where he lives with his parents, a North Dighton, the 21-year-old appeared in a prisoner's uniform before the Boston courthouse, where he was formally charged with violating theEspionage Act.

The charges could cost him up to a maximum of 10 and 5 years, even if it turns out – as it seems so far – that Teixeira was not a spy and had no intention of harming US interests.

However, the Biden administration wants an exemplary punishment, also for the purpose of deterrence. The Minister of Justice merrick garland announced that they will be required “very heavy punishments”.

President Biden has ordered to protect and limit the distribution of sensitive information, while Congress is calling for new security and personnel selection protocols, especially in generation Z - that of social networks.

The Espionage Act, a repeatedly amended 1917 law, has been widely applied to Americans caught spying for foreign countries.
