Hot square, clashes around Montecitorio to the cry #IoApro

The VAT numbers return to the streets with the slogan "I open", hands raised with handcuffs, all in chorus shouting "freedom". There were moments of high tension during the clashes with the police forces, when Casapound militants infiltrated the demonstrators.

Immediately the position taken by one of the leaders of the protest, Carriera, to disavow the support of the far-right organization: "We dissociate ourselves from what happened and from their protest".

The demonstration, not authorized by the Rome Police Headquarters, started from Piazza San Silvestro and aimed to reach Piazza Montecitorio. The representatives of the VAT numbers have claimed their right to work. "We are families, we are not criminals, we are people who work 14 hours a day ”.

The tension began to rise with the arrival in the square of the representatives of Casapound, led by the Ostiense leader, Luke Marshall. The attempt to march towards Piazza Montecitorio was rejected by the agents in riot gear, while the group of "I open" he tried to keep his distance from the far right movement. "Don't go there, that is not our manifestation "one of them yelled. Bottles, firecrackers and smoke bombs were launched from the rear towards the cordon of police, carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza. From that moment on, the square split in two, with the group of “IoApro” on one side and Casapound on the other. And just when the demonstration seemed to have died down, about a hundred demonstrators first headed towards Piazza del Popolo and then managed to reach Via dei Prefetti, a stone's throw from Parliament, and were again blocked by the police. But the most delicate moments occurred shortly after when the last garrison of the demonstrators marched in a procession from Via del Corso to Piazza del Popolo. There they blocked traffic on the Muro Torto. From that moment the charge of the police began. At the end of the day of protest, a delegation was received by the Undersecretary for the Economy, Claudius Durigon. "From the meeting with Undersecretary Durigon it emerged that the government's intention is to evaluate any reopening with the return to the yellow zones - Carriera reported on the sidelines of the meeting -. The decision will be made on the basis of the data arriving on Friday, and we will continue to protest until that day ”.

Political reactions. "We understand the difficulties faced by many citizens due to the necessary restrictions due to the pandemic - we read in a note from the pentastellato group -, but this does not justify that protest and the legitimate right of criticism turn into violence, which is always to be condemned". "We have the utmost respect for those who protest in the square and all categories in serious difficulty due to Covid-19 must be concretely supported - states the Minister Boccia - but what does Casapound have to do with restaurateurs in an unauthorized square?
