The campaign, according to Reuters, intends to "work in concert" with President Trump's push to "economically reduce Iran" which has announced a series of economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic and has intensified its critical statements against Tehran following the US withdrawal. from the Iranian nuclear deal last May.

Known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the international agreement was reached in 2015 between Iran and a group of nations known as P5 + 1, namely the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany. The agreement provided for Iran to stop its nuclear weapons development program in exchange for the end of economic sanctions by the West.

Ramezan Sharif, spokesman for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), arguably the most powerful branch of the Iranian military, issued a warning on Sunday against "foreign secret services". Ramezan Sharif, said Iran will take revenge on foreign intelligence services "seeking to disrupt the security of Iranian borders" referring to an armed attack last Saturday in the northwestern region of Marivan, near the Iran-Iraq border. .

The attack targeted an Iranian military complex in the village of Dari and culminated in the bombing of an IRGC weapons depot. According to Iranian media, the explosion resulted in the deaths of 11 Iranian border guards.
