The crowdfunding campaign seeks the release of CIA mental control program files

An online fundraising campaign is trying to get the release of over 4.000 pages of documents related to a controversial mind control program developed by the US Central Intelligence Agency.

The project, called MKNAOMI / MKULTRA preserved in the archives of the United States government, is the result of a joint effort by the CIA and the US Department of Defense to study the effects of drugs, such as heroin and LSD, on the brain. human.

The study, started in 1953, over the years has seen the involvement of hundreds of scientists, many of whom did not know how to work on a project related to the CIA. The project was then closed quickly after the US Congress's post-Watergate investigation revealed the death of at least one person and the application of drugs on hundreds of non-consenting subjects.

Many lawsuits filed in various US courts all related to the "MKULTRA" project. In the 2004, Black Vault, a volunteer website specializing in publishing declassified government documents, published tens of thousands of pages that were released by the CIA following a lengthy application of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

But in 2016, a Black Vault reader noted the lack of some of the documents mentioned in the index. Working through the news aggregation and discussion website "Reddit", a group of readers identified all the irregularities in the released documents and informed Black Vault owner John Greenwald. Greenwald then contacted the CIA and, after two years, the "FOIA desk" made it known that the missing pages would require a separate FOIA request because, according to the CIA, the original FOIA request had required "mind control" documents, while the missing pages referred to "behavior modification," a separate topic.

For the release of the "behavioral modification" pages the CIA asked Greenwald for a $ 425,80 payment.

After trying in vain to convince the CIA that it should free the pages for free, as included in the original 2004 FOIA petition, Greenwald decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign using the popular crowdfunding site GoFundMe to raise $ 500 for a new FOIA and the related expenses.

On Wednesday evening, the sum was reached and the owner of the Black Vault website is preparing to present an FOIA for 4.358 pages of the MKULTRA project that are missing in the original version of the 2004 document.
