A DVI team arrives today in Ethiopia (Disaster Victim Identification) of the State Police, left yesterday evening from Fiumicino to collaborate in identifying the eight Italian victims, of the plane crash of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737, the 10 fell last March and in which 157 people died.
The DVI team is an excellence of the Italian Scientific Police, made up of forensic doctors, biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers, psychologists, fingerprinters, computer scientists, video signalers who are involved in mass disasters involving Italian victims all over the world. The latest tragedies in which he intervened were the disaster of the “Costa Concordia” in January 2012, the shipwreck of migrants in Lampedusa in October 2013 and the earthquake in Amatrice, Accumuli and Arquata del Tronto in August 2016.
In Ethiopia, the Italian team, supplemented by doctors from the Central Health Department, will support an international team of DVI specialists, thanks to the work of the SCIP (International Police Cooperation Service) of the Central Directorate of Criminal Police, the law enforcement control room Italian for all international initiatives.
In particular, the SCIP managed with the Ethiopian Authorities and the Interpol Secretariat of Lyon, in agreement with the Crisis Unit of the Farnesina and in conjunction with the Embassy of Italy in Addis Ababa, all the preliminary organizational phases and, thanks to the dispatch of two operators who will work alongside the Italian DVI team, it will provide all the support activities, facilitating any useful information exchange between Ethiopia and Italy to allow the identification of the Italian victims in the shortest possible time.
The Italian mission has the objective of supporting the Italian families of the victims - constantly assisted, from the first moment of the tragedy, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Crisis Unit - providing a highly specialized contribution on the ground.
