Rome: the memory of the Via Fani massacre

The ceremony commemorating the 41th anniversary of the Via Fani massacre took place this morning in Rome, in the presence of the President of the Council of Ministers Giuseppe Conte, of the highest offices of the State, of civil and military authorities, of the victims' families.

The ceremony began with the deposition of a laurel wreath in the name of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The commemoration then continued with the deposition of the laurel wreath of the President of the Council of Ministers, Giuseppe Conte, who observed a moment of recollection in memory of the fallen.

Even the Chief of Police Franco Gabrielli, present at the commemoration, laid a laurel wreath on the monument inaugurated last year, which bears witness to a "new" memory to remember the victims of the massacre.

History

9,03 am on March 16, 1978 in Rome. An anonymous phone call to 113 reports gunshots in via Fani.

Inside an Alfa Romeo Alfetta the corpse of the Public Security guard Giulio Rivera and the agonizing body of the Deputy Brigadier of Public Security Francesco Zizzi; inside the Fiat 130 that preceded the Alfetta, the corpses of the Carabinieri officer Domenico Ricci and of the Carabinieri Marshal Oreste Leonardi; on the ground the Public Security guard Raffaele Iozzino.

The massacre was carried out by a commando of the Red Brigades who on that occasion kidnapped the honorable Aldo Moro, the statesman of the Christian Democrats who was then killed 55 days later.

The 3 young policemen, the 16 February of the 1979 were awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Valor.

Their names are also engraved in the small tombstones of the Shrine present at the Police High School.
