Rome, the traffic wardens: "we are not the lifeguards of the Trevi Fountain"

The traffic police of #Roma do not want to be lifeguards at Fontana di #Trevi. The controversy broke out in recent days following the entry into force of the new task envisaged by the “Urban Police Regulations”. The new code, writes Il Messaggero, in addition to reiterating that the dives in the historic fountains of the City, are banned (but this had already been happening for years), puts in line a slew of new prohibitions. Among these, there is a permanent ban on "climbing, lying or sitting" on the monumental pools. At the top of the list, for obvious reasons, is Nicola Salvi's eighteenth-century masterpiece, the Trevi Fountain, the only tourist attraction guarded 24 hours a day by the Municipal patrols.

The police of the capital, through the unions, ask the #Campidoglio to dispense them from this task and to set up a system of fixed barriers around the fountain, to prevent tourists from approaching.

"We can't just be lifeguards"- says Francesco #Croce, secretary of the Uil Public Function of Rome - An infrastructure is needed that prevents tourists from sitting by the pool. Pursuing those approaching the fountain is a task that debases in-service agents. Who makes irony about being in the sun for hours, should see red colleagues in the face or with illness. You can't go on like this, you need changes, even to direct visitors . If there is a guardrail on the side of the road, the motorist avoids making a U-turn, instead there is nothing near the fountain ". There are only the police, few and not able to enforce the Regulation.

The Campidoglio Police has equipped itself using yellow ribbons to limit the transit around the Trevi Fountain. The goal is to prevent visitors from going down the short staircase, with the possibility of "hooking up" the pool. The problem raised is that with the new regulation tourists cannot even sit down and the police maintain that they cannot manage the enormous and uninterrupted flow of people.

Meanwhile, the unions have already sent a letter to Mayor Raggi for a meeting that will most likely take place in early September.
