Russia on the China model: "homemade internet network"

Russia is increasingly active in cyber space: it would be thinking of its own web outside the world internet network. An "independent" web, immune from any external cyber attack. Industry insiders explain that the Moscow initiative is nothing more than a ploy to increase control and censorship on the internet, to the detriment of the Russians. The narrative of the country's cybersecurity would be just one way to convince the most skeptical.

Some sources say that a first trial is scheduled as early as the beginning of April. At the legislative level, after the April test, it will be possible to begin with the approval of the law that will have to pass twice by the Duma and then go to the Senate for final ratification. The epochal reform in the cybersecurity sector will be technically successful only after all the online service providers operating in Russia are able to ensure the timing of the new technical means for centralized control of internet traffic. The Russian telecommunications agency Roskomnadzor will manage the blocking of the web network, which already today requires internet operators to keep the data of Russian citizens in servers located in Russia, naturally accessible by the Kremlin intelligence services.  "This law involves serious risks for civil society»Denounced the director of the NGO for the defense of internet freedom Roskomsvoboda, ArtyomKozliuk. Everything has a price and in this specific case the expense will be huge. According to the government-appointed expert council, the autonomy of the Russian network could cost 334 million euros immediately and then 1,8 billion euros a year.
