Ryanair and Wizz: hand baggage with payment suspended the new policy

According to the Antitrust Authority, the request for a supplement for an essential element provides a false representation of the real price of the ticket and spoils the comparison with other companies

(by Giovanni D'Agata) The Antitrust Authority, following the initiation of an investigation procedure, ordered the suspension of the new hand luggage policy of the low-cost airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air as a precautionary measure, which would come into force from today 1 November 2018.

This is stated in a note from the Antitrust Authority. According to the new policy, "a price supplement is required for hand luggage (trolley), which however, he explains, represents a non-eventual and foreseeable burden for the consumer which should be included in the standard rate". the Antitrust Authority, the request for a supplement for an essential element of the air transport contract, such as hand baggage, provides a false representation of the real price of the ticket and spoils the comparison with the rates of other companies, misleading the consumer ".

Based on the decision of the Authority, Ryanair and Wizz Air will therefore have to temporarily suspend all activities aimed at requesting a price supplement, compared to the standard rate, for the transport of 'large hand luggage' (trolley), making it available free of charge to consumers, on board or in the hold, a space equivalent to that provided for the transport of hand luggage in the aircraft. The companies, highlights Giovanni D'Agata, president of the “Rights Desk”, 60% of travelers will not be affected by the changes. They will have to notify the Authority within 5 days of the measures adopted in compliance with the decision.
