Clashes at the holy site in Jerusalem between Palestinians and Israeli police

According to reports from Reuters, witnesses reported that Israeli police fired sound grenades to disperse Palestinians during Sunday's clashes outside the Jerusalem al-Aqsa mosque, where tens of thousands of Muslims gathered for the holidays of Eid al-Adha.

A Palestinian medical facility said at least 14 Palestinian citizens were injured and were taken by ambulances to hospital for treatment, while Israeli public radio Kan reported that four police officers were injured.

The clashes began as the complex crowded out of the third holiest site in Islam, the Palestinians sang "With our soul and our blood we will redeem you, Aqsa".

Venerated by the Jews as the Temple Mount, the site of two Jewish biblical temples and by the Muslims as the noble shrine, the area is one of the most sensitive sites in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an attempt to avoid friction on the site, the police banned non-Muslim visitors from entering, including Jews wishing to make a pilgrimage of Tisha B'Av, before the clashes broke out.

The complex is located in a part of Jerusalem controlled by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war but which has not gained international recognition.
