Search and rescue, injured young man recovered from an Air Force helicopter on the Pollino massif in Calabria

The intervention was carried out in collaboration with the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps

Yesterday evening, Wednesday 29 July, a crew of the 84 ° Combat Search and Rescue Center (CSAR) of the 15 ° Stormo dell'Aeronautica Militare took off from the military airport of Gioia del Colle (BA), to provide assistance to a twenty-seven year old hiker injured on Mount Manfriana due to a fall.

The military crew, in national alarm readiness, with a HH-139 helicopter, received the order to proceed to the rescue from the Rescue Coordination Center of the Italian Air Operation Center in Poggio Renatico (FE). The aircraft took off at about 18.30 and headed for the sports field of Fracineto (CS), where it picked up two operators of the National Corps of Alpine and Speleological Rescue, and then headed towards the operation area. The traumatized young man was identified, also thanks to the help of night vision goggles, and subsequently transported safely to Fracineto, where an ambulance awaited him for the necessary treatments.

At the end of the rescue, in the late evening, the Air Force helicopter returned to Gioia del Colle, where technical specialists from the base carried out maintenance on the aircraft, thus allowing it to continue to ensure national SAR readiness.

The 84th CSAR Center in Gioia del Colle - together with the other SAR Centers located at the airports of Pratica di Mare (RM), Cervia (RA), Trapani and Decimomannu (CA) - guarantees 24 hours a day, 24 days a year, the search and rescue of flight crews in difficulty, as well as contributes to activities of public utility such as the search for missing persons at sea or in the mountains, the emergency medical transport of the sick in danger of life and the rescue of seriously traumatized , forest firefighting activities as well as Slow Mover Interception (SMI) missions during major events.

The Italian Air Operation Center (IT-AOC) is the operational structure of the Aerospace Operations Command which is responsible for supervising, coordinating and approving daily operational flight activities for all the Armed Forces and Armed Forces of the State.
