Alpine ship moors in Boston for joint exercise allied countries

The European multi frigate of the Navy Alpine Mission (FREMM), arrived today at the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal in Boston (USA), where it will stop until the 12 June.

Nave Alpino, handed over to the Navy the 30 September 2016, is the fifth FREMM unit and the fourth in "anti-submarine" version. It is a ship set up with state-of-the-art and latest generation technological systems.

The overseas campaign, the confrontation and the joint activities with friendly and allied Marine, constitute a precious opportunity for training, useful to maintain high levels of cooperation for the strengthening of relations with the trans-regional allies.

Nave Alpino will guarantee a qualified and technologically relevant presence in several countries with which Italy has important political-diplomatic, economic and military cooperation relations. The activities that will be carried out are framed, more generally, within the institutional tasks that the Navy, without interruption, ensures our country and the community in all areas of strategic interest, ensuring a concrete naval presence aimed at sea-control, to the security of commercial communication lines (Sea Line of Communication - SLOC), the supervision of national maritime activities, the deterrence and contrast to illegal activities on the high seas, international cooperation and training.

This campaign is relevant both for the possibility of projecting the image of the Navy, the Armed Forces and the country system in areas of unusual gravitation, and for the support provided to the international competitiveness of important national realities. The important activity aimed at showing and making known the operational capabilities of the Unit in favor of delegations composed of members of the United States Congress and officers of the US Navy as part of the information process for the definition by the US Navy, of a new class of frigates (named US acquisition program Future Frigate Program FFG (X) designed to fill the capacitive gap between the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and class units Arleigh Burke.

This maritime projection initiative e naval diplomacy it is part of the broader project that aims to "create a system", integrating the operational capabilities of the Crew with the modern Italian manufacturing systems embarked on an Alpine ship, built by FINCANTIERI, sole sponsor and campaign partner.

The overseas presence is also an opportunity to meet the numerous Italian communities residing abroad and also includes the organization of cultural events and the promotion of the image of Italy and its excellence.

During the stop, Nave Alpino will be open to public visits on the following days and times:

Friday 8 June: from 15.00 to 18.00

Saturday 9 June: from 15.00 to 18.00

Monday 11 June: from 10.00 to 12.00

Insights
The Alpine Frigate, under the command of Frigate Captain Davide Da Pozzo, is part of the Italian-French FREMM program (European Multi Mission Frigate). It was launched on 13 December 2014 at the Riva Trigoso (GE) shipyard and delivered to the Italian Navy on 30 September 2016. On 9 June 2017 it received the Combat flag in Civitavecchia.

Characterized by the optical distinctive F 594, according to NATO classification, it is a new generation frigate, characterized by remarkable technological innovations and employment opportunities in various operational contexts.

It is the fifth FREMM and the fourth in the "anti submarine" version (Anti Submarine Warfare - ASW). It embarks a crew of 168 men and women - almost half of the previous frigates - and, thanks to its 200 total beds, is able to accommodate the staff of a complex command, a team of special forces and a team of specialists for the use of two medium-heavy helicopters. It has a displacement of 6700 tons and reaches the 27 speed nodes thanks to the CODLAG hybrid propulsion (a gas turbine and two electric motors) that also guarantees low consumption and high autonomy.
