Syria: negotiations begin, mediated by the UN, to seek a political solution to the crisis

The crisis situation in Syria, where since 2011 has lost over 340 thousand people since March, is becoming increasingly critical.

After the eight rounds of talks tried by the UN in Geneva - lastly the one in December where the parties in conflict - the damascus regime and the rebels - have failed to agree on the main obstacle posed by the future Syrian president Bashar al-Assad[1]today, in Vienna, 2 days of negotiations are started, mediated by the United Nations, to try to find a political solution to the crisis.

Staffan de Mistura, UN special envoy, said that the Vienna negotiations foresee "full delegations" from the opposition and the government.

Nasr al-Hariri, representative of the Syrian Commission for negotiations, said that these meetings will be "a true test for all parties".

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, after highlighting the considerable worsening of the humanitarian situation in Afrin, where the Turkish military offensive "Olive branch" has been underway since Saturday, as well as in Idlib - where the army Russia-backed Syrian launched a military offensive in late 2017 to recapture the last area still completely out of the regime's control - and in eastern Ghouta, he said the Vienna talks represent "the last hope" to reach a political solution.

The moment remains very critical.
