The New Year does not stop pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong

Protests continue in Hong Kong. According to an estimate provided by the organizers, at least one million people participated in the pro-democracy march, outnumbering the procession organized on June 9 that kicked off the season of anti-government protest demonstrations in the former British colony.

Due to several violent incidents, riot police used stinging spray and tear gas, while some demonstrators launched Molotov cocktails.

The most violent protesters, masked in black, gathered to set up makeshift barricades, some structures were vandalized. The organizers of the march had obtained the authorization from the city authorities, but, after the start of the clashes, they were ordered to end the march immediately.

According to what was posted on Twitter by a protester, who released some live images of the procession, the clashes began when plainclothes officers arrested people for alleged vandalism.

The police have meanwhile announced the closure of all parks and sports centers in the Central area.
