The potential of Smart Working according to the director SVIMEZ

The issue of smart working of workers from large urban centers who move to peripheral mountain areas and more generally to the South is interesting. This was stated by SVIMEZ Director Luca Bianchi speaking in Bologna at the Labor Festival organized by Nobilita Senza Filtri. "We do not yet have an exact dimension of the phenomenon, which however seems to break an unavoidable process, that of the tendency towards agglomeration of growth paths where there was a strong attraction of the large urban areas of the north, of central Europe, of all the major skills available on the territory ".

The potential of remote work has made it possible for some young and old to return to their territory of origin where obviously some competitive advantages can be appreciated in terms of quality of life and localization costs. According to the Director SVIMEZ, "if you really think, as many young and old are experiencing in this period, that you can work in a place far from your usual home, close to personal affections, in an adequate manner in terms of productivity, accompany this process with policies that guarantee a greater balance of essential services, citizenship rights, which should be distributed throughout the entire territory ”. Bianchi argues that “while waiting for the high-speed train in Palermo, we need to guarantee quality services in the territories (nursery schools, local transport, healthcare) which concern essential parts of life. If many people start working and smart working in the South or in internal areas, their very presence represents a fundamental humus for creating further opportunities for growth and work in that territory, and in these terms it can be a development accelerator ".

"The first challenge we face is that of a reorganization of work, so far faced in the emergency phase during the lockdown, limiting ourselves to being confined within the four walls of the house - concludes Bianchi - We need to design a way of working also in ordinary form, autonomously organizing times, spaces and working methods ".

Ultimately, it is possible to continue to produce wealth for the country avoiding depopulating the areas of the South, but this requires offering the best conditions for the location of businesses, but first of all for the attraction of people. Remote working must also be supported by public interventions through the municipalities that make available, for example, equipped co-working areas in order to make development not only more balanced but also more sustainable and social.
