The reform of local public transport is no longer postponed. It is urgent to think with a prospective vision to start a radical reorganization of public transport, the last reorganization of which dates back to 1997.

Minister Paola De Micheli started from this in introducing the work of today's meeting on public transport with the Regions, local authorities and associations of companies in the sector. In addition to the constant monitoring of the demand for mobility in this emergency phase and its possible fluctuations between the different regions, the analysis of the methods of use of the resources already allocated, the policy of timetables of the individual cities, starting from the schools and places of the work, the minister has launched a time schedule for the start of the reform of local public transport.

As early as next week, a commission made up of technical and operational representatives of MIT, and also composed of Anci, Upi, Conference of Regions, associations of public transport companies, will meet to start a discussion on the guidelines for the definition of a new model. of local transport able to face the recovery at the end of the emergency. During today's meeting, everyone was asked to indicate within the next few days the name of who will participate in the reform table which will have to provide the first results by the end of March.

“Economic resources, even if important, are not enough if we do not intervene on organizational models. The world has changed for some time, not only with this emergency, and we have a reform of public transport that has stopped in 1997. It is quite clear that this model cannot work, neither in an emergency, nor at the end of the pandemic. The 200 million advanced for 2021, 100 of which for additional services, must be aimed at reorganizing the transport system. If these are followed by the 3 billion for the replacement of buses and 8 for the implementation of rapid mass transport systems, it is even more evident how necessary it is not to waste these resources but to make them more efficient and to optimize them ”, said the minister.
