Tourism stronger than the crisis triggered by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

Italian tourism has one of the best European performances

Tourist Italy is giving positive signals. According to the survey commissioned by Enit on the trend in hospitality, summer looks promising despite international tensions. The forecasts of customer attendance in the structures for 2022 are quite in line with the pre-pandemic levels.

“The debut of a summer that brings us back to pre-pandemic hints and to a future of tourism with trends that focus on sustainability and the value of traveling, declining elements of personalization of the offer”, declares Roberta Garibaldi Ad Enit.

According to the Enit Research Department, bookings to Italy continue compared to last year, even with respect to those recorded for a sample of competing countries.

It is estimated a + 324% (on 2021) in June and + 222% (again on 2021) in July.

European air traffic grew steadily from mid-March to early May. Airline bookings also show a growing demand for intra-European travel and for flights from the US to Europe. The easing of travel restrictions is contributing to travel normalization (36 countries lifted all travel restrictions related to COVID 19 starting May 13, 2022). The war in Ukraine had a minimal impact on hotel and non-hotel reservations which, in 90% of cases, were confirmed for both periods with a preference for bookings through telephone and online contact.

These are mainly couples and families followed by tourists on a leisure trip. The former preferred non-hotel structures while tourists mainly chose hotels. Less than half (about 40%) of the organizations interviewed say that the war in Ukraine is having an effect on their business.

According to the operators interviewed, the greatest impact of international tensions is reflected and will be reflected in the increase in energy and gas costs that affect the management of the facility.
