A new life during and after the coronavirus

(by Dr. Fiorillo Lisa - Psychologist) This paper does not want to have the presumption of giving a scientific explanation about the coronavirus, but rather that of bringing to light its psychological implications. If, even for just a moment, we stop to think about what is happening it all seems so surreal, almost like in a movie. ù

The sad truth is that however it is real, we are in a particular historical period that is testing our being and our relationship with others. Suddenly everything changed! We found ourselves locked in our own house, which now seems to us almost to have taken on the appearance of a prison.

At first it looked great. We finally had the opportunity to rest, to see in pajamas that film that we always wanted to see, to indulge ourselves with recipes never made because of the lack of time, to devote ourselves to puzzles never finished, cross stitch, do it yourself, great cleaning, and so on, the list could go on and on.

But, after the first week, we realized that everything had lost that semblance of novelty and little by little each of us began to feel empty, dull, bewildered, agitated, in short, to experience an amalgam of mixed feelings.

We began to reflect on the importance of small gestures, on the really important things and people in our life. Our mind, in  naturally, he literally separated things and people between the container of what matters and that of the irrelevant. Only now are we understanding, for example, the importance of being able to go out freely even just for a simple walk, or to go eat a pizza, or to meet a loved one and be able to hold her in a strong and warm embrace. Even when everything is finished, alas, there will always be a fear in us of making even these small gestures because this virus broke something inside us, it has swept us away as only a hurricane can do and it is a feeling that we will carry within us forever; it may gradually fade, but it will always occupy, like a grain of sand, a small part of us.

All we have to do now is to get up, to be united as ever, to respect the rules to be able to get out stronger and free. We do not continue to make things worse, we defeat this evil that has overwhelmed us with such vehemence and we draw the good from what is happening to us.

Feeling emotions is a privilege, learning to express them helps us to get closer to those we love and to be peaceful with ourselves and with others.

The difference is made by those who know how to stay close to you even from a distance.
