In Anguillara Veneta (PD) the commemoration of the death of the policeman Domenico Zorzino after whom a square was named
This morning in Anguillara Veneta (PD) the commemoration of the Deputy Superintendent of the State Police Domenico Zorzino, Gold Medal for Civil Valor, who died on 3 March 2023 during the rescue attempt of a person who slipped into the waters of the Gorzone canal took place . After the religious service, a square was inaugurated in his memory.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the Central Anti-Crime Director Alessandro Giuliano, the Prefect of Padua Francesco Messina, the Police Commissioner Marco Odorisio, the Mayor of Anguillara Veneta Alessandra Buoso, the Undersecretary of Justice Andrea Ostellari, the deputies Elisabetta Gardini and Arianna Lazzarini. Also present were Domenico Zorzino's wife, Sabina, his son Tommaso, his brother Angelo with his mother Aurelia and his father Giovanni.
It was the afternoon of March 3, 2023 when the Assistant Chief Coordinator Domenico Zorzino, on duty at the Veneto Crime Prevention Department, while he was free from duty walking along the Gorzone canal, saw a car with a man on board slide into the waters. After alerting all the emergency services by telephone, he threw himself into the canal but, in a desperate attempt to bring him back to shore, he lost his life together with his fellow villager who ended up in the river. They were found by the fire brigade divers still hugging each other.
On the occasion of the 171st Anniversary of the Foundation of the State Police, the President of the Republic awarded the Assistant Chief Coordinator Domenico Zorzino the gold medal for civil valor with the following motivation: "Free from duty, having noticed a vehicle was sinking into a canal, after having alerted the Carabinieri Operations Centre, he threw himself into the water to save the person inside. Despite the treacherousness of the waters, he reached the victim and, dragging him out of the cockpit, tied him to himself to lead him to the shore. The adverse conditions did not allow the valiant undertaking to be completed, which ended with the death of both. Shining example of courage and human solidarity pushed to the extreme sacrifice. 03 March 2023 – Anguillara Veneta (Pd)”.
The Central Anti-Crime Director Alessandro Giuliano, in his speech, thanked the Municipality of Anguillara for the decision to dedicate a square to Domenico Zorzino who, with his unforgettable gesture of altruism, makes people proud to wear the same uniform. His example will remain engraved in the memory of a community and of all policemen. I would be happy if Domenico's example served as a guide for the children of Anguillara and for our young people who wear the uniform of the Stat Police, he concluded.
