Versalis, Eni's chemical company, has published the 2022 Sustainability Report in which it recounts its contribution to the development of more sustainable and circular models, in line with Eni's strategy and values. The document also explores the targets that the company has set itself to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The challenge of decarbonisation reserves a role of great responsibility for the chemical industry as, due to its energy-intensive activity, it is considered "hard to abate", difficult to decarbonise.
Versalis intends to play a key role in the transition through the development of new technologies, products and complementary and synergistic solutions that help outline a business model with low emissions and create a more sustainable future.
“We are committed to making our contribution to combating climate change, through the actions we carry out on a daily basis: the identification of more sustainable alternatives for the procurement of raw materials and energy, the development of chemistry from renewable sources, the adoption of solutions aimed at reducing the energy impact, the intense research activities dedicated to the development of new technologies, processes and products for decarbonisation. We work so that the continuous path towards decarbonisation offers opportunities for the growth of the social fabric and prosperity of the territories in which we operate, through the development of new activities and production chains" said Adriano Alfani, CEO of Versalis.
The Sustainability Report shows the intermediate emissions reduction targets: in particular, compared to the reference year 2018, 15% for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2025 and 30% by 2035. These short- and medium-term targets are fundamental milestones for achieving the Net Zero* objective by 2050. Actions have also been planned for achieving the objectives: for Scope 1, interventions on industrial processes and in particular on steam -cracking; for Scope 2, increase in plant efficiency and use of energy from renewable sources; for Scope 3, development of circular economy and chemical initiatives from renewable raw materials, providing for the direct involvement of the entire network of suppliers and customers to encourage them to contribute to the reduction of emissions.
