Libya, the Rome conference kicks off, 350 delegates expected from 34 African countries and 13 international organizations

Italy is trying to get all African support, in view of the Palermo conference on Libya scheduled for 12 and 13 November.

Thirty-four African countries and 13 international organizations, including the European Union, are invited to participate in the Rome Conference, organized by the Italian Foreign Ministry, next Thursday.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Italian Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, defined the conference as a great event and said that "it represents a key moment for the dialogue between Italy and the African continent, which is experiencing a dramatic demographic growth and economic ".

The Italian Foreign Minister discussed the preparations for the Palermo meeting with his Russian counterpart during a recent visit to Moscow. It is hoped that the Kremlin will send a senior Russian representative. Even the US will be present in Palermo. However, the level of participation is not known. In Italy it is hoped the State Department head Mike Pompeo will participate.

“The Rome conference is a particularly important occasion, which underlines Italy's commitment to the African continent and the excellent response received is proof of this,” Milanesi said in a press release.

The importance of the Rome Conference is also evident from the fact that the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella will open the works that will then be closed by the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

In the declaration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the centrality of the Libyan dossier for Italy is recognized, stating that the initiative aims to facilitate stability in Libya and the ongoing political process based on the United Nations plan.
