Germany: Merkel re-elected Chancellor for the fourth time

Today, the German parliament is called today to confirm Angela Merkel as chancellor.

On the 709 deputies who, in this legislature, compose the Lower House of Parliament, 364 voted in favor of the new Merkel government, while 315 opposed and there were nine abstentions.

The chancellor, once elected by an absolute majority, will go to Palazzo Bellevue for the appointment as chancellor by the federal president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and then return to the Bundestag to take an oath, around 12.

After more than five months of political stalemate following the election of last September 24, Merkel intends to reunite her new government early this afternoon to get the job done quickly and by the week she should go to Paris to meet President Emmanuel Macron.
