🎤Uccided by the Mafia: a poem for Giacomo Ciaccio Montalto

“To an upright man, straight in his gaze on the world and on life who on a dark January day fell by the hand of a dirty path!

To an honest man, found dead lifeless in the viscous mist of winter by a shepherd who saw at the break of dawn, a cold body lying on the ground ..., a seed wrapped in the mud of a ruinous night, which only left him in sight of the wind, which vehemently swept him away, stealing his time! "

by Fabio Strinati

Giacomo Ciaccio Montalto spends his childhood and adolescence in Milan. In the sixties he graduated in Law in Rome and, once he won the competition in the judiciary, he obtained the opportunity to go to work in Trapani, the land of his roots, as deputy prosecutor. For twelve years he lived a very private life. Little worldliness and few trusted friends; he loves the sea and regattas, he listens to classical music in an old house, where he spends his hours off work with his family. In the seventies he was a prosecutor in the trial against Michele Vinci, the so-called "monster of Marsala", who kidnapped, thrown into a well and left three girls to die, including a niece. Due to his investigation, Ciaccio is a cumbersome threat to Mafia affairs. He himself is concerned about his fate. The Sicilian writer Vincenzo Consolo, who collected a revealed testimony from Ciaccio, will tell about it years later. At that time Consolo worked for the Palermo newspaper L'Ora» as a reporter and was in Trapani to follow the trial of the "monster of Marsala". Consolo recalls: «One day Ciaccio called me and told me that he wanted to meet me in Valderice, in his house, alone. One evening I went and welcomed me with his wife, a woman who had all the worries about her husband in her eyes. He revealed that he had received threats: "Don't write anything, do it only if something should happen to me," he said. He was killed by the mafia January 25, 83 a Valderice.
