In January 2022, the current pensions were 17,7 million, 1,3 million those paid in 2021

The pensions in force as of January 1, 2022 are 17.749.278, of which 13.766.604 (77,6%) of a social security nature and 3.982.674 (22,4%) of a welfare nature.

The total annual amount is equal to 218,6 billion euros, of which 195,4 billion supported by pension funds and 23,2 billion by welfare ones. 

48,4% of the pensions is borne by the management of private employees: the most important is the Employee Pension Fund which manages 45,8% of the total pensions paid and 58,7% of the amounts paid. 

The managements of the self-employed workers disburse 28,2% of the pensions for an amount in payment equal to 24,3% of the total, while the welfare managements provide 22,4% of the benefits, with an amount in payment equal to 10,6 % of the total.

In 2021, 1.315.171 pensions were paid, 44,2% of which were of a welfare nature. The annualized amounts allocated for the new liquidated in 2021 amount to € 14,1 billion, which represents approximately 6,5% of the total annual amount in payment as of January 1, 2022.    

Social security benefits consist of 68,0% of old-age pensions, of which just over half (57,2%) paid to men, for 5,7% of social security invalidity pensions of which 55,5, 26,3% paid to males and 12,3% from survivors' pensions, which have a masculinity rate of XNUMX%. 

About 75,1% of old-age / early retirement pensions are paid to men, while this percentage drops to 37,1% for pensions in the old-age sub-category.

Also in the social security invalidity (law 222/84) there is a male preponderance: 65,3% for the disability allowance and 69,8% for the disability pension. Invalidity pensions running before Law 222/84 had a masculinity rate of 31,9%, due to the high age of the holders of these benefits and the greater longevity of women.

The welfare benefits consist of 20,3% of pensions and social allowances, of which 37,3% paid to men; the remaining 79,7% of the benefits are paid to disabled civilians in the form of a pension and / or allowance, with a masculinity index of 41,3%. 

With regard to the social security pensions paid in 2021, 60,4% of the total is made up of old-age pensions, 7,4% by those of social security disability and 32,3% by those to survivors.

Welfare benefits consist of 6,7% social allowances and 93,3% civil disability benefits.

On the other hand, considering the civil invalids by composition of the amount, the number is 601.298 only pensions, 1.771.213 only allowances and 401.029 pensions and accompanying allowances together, for a total total of 2.773.540 civil invalids. 

From the analysis of the territorial distribution, the geographical area with the highest percentage of pension benefits is northern Italy, with 47,85%; 19,31% of pensions are paid to the Center, while 30,77% in southern Italy and the islands; the remaining 2,06% (366.226 pensions) is paid to subjects residing abroad.

The North has a higher number of pensions per resident for the old-age and survivors categories, followed by the Center and the South, while the order is reversed for the pensions of the social security invalidity category and for welfare benefits.

As regards the territorial distribution of the amounts disbursed, 55,2% of the sums allocated at the beginning of the year are destined for northern Italy (for old age the percentage goes to 60,2%), 24,4% for southern Italy and the Islands (for pensions and social allowances the percentage goes to 55,4%), 19,7% to central Italy and finally 0,7% to subjects residing abroad. 

The average monthly amount of the old-age pension is 1.285,44 euros, with a higher value in the north (1.379,92 euros).

The analysis of the distribution by age shows an average age of retirees of 74,1 years, with a difference between the two genders of 4,7 years (71,5 years for men and 76,2 years for women).

Analyzing the distribution by monthly amount classes of pensions, a strong concentration in the lower classes is observed. In fact, 58,4% of pensions have an amount of less than 750,00 euros. This percentage, which for women reaches 71,1%, is only an indicative measure of "poverty", due to the fact that many retirees are entitled to several pension benefits or other income.
