Wastewater: methodologies and regulations of the Veneto Region

Our sector rightly favors technologies that allow us to stay on the market with a more logical and sustainable vision, always following the evolution of legislation. Also with regard to the management of waste water as regards the Veneto Region, for example, we of the Green Holding Group have placed ourselves on the market by operating with companies that treat water in an optimal manner.

In fact, the resolution of the Regional Council which on 26 March approved the safety of contaminated drinking water sources through the organization of a Technical Committee is recent. This is to regulate and control, among other things, the excessive presence of pfas which caused a small regional emergency.

According to an Arpav study, the purification systems present in the area guarantee an adequate reduction of the incoming organic load. This is despite the substantial contribution of parasitic waters in the sewage system, which is very often stressing the sedimentation compartment and greatly reducing the potential of the plants.

We must adapt to the legislation also and above all not to disperse potential energy in the process, which on the contrary would be generated through biogas by a healthy and proper treatment of waste water.

As well as making targeted reclamation of contaminated land it would allow to obtain waste sludge to be used in the field of cultivation, also and above all to be applied to the Po Valley which we know is poor in organic substances. For this last point, in fact, a 2013 study demonstrates through the analysis of the MUD (Single Declaration Model) of the sludge producers that recovery by composting is by far the most adopted solution. Slightly lower quantities are still destined for biological treatment (30-40%) while less than 20% is sent to landfill and only 5-10% is applied in the agricultural field.

"The use of sludge in agriculture, in compliance with national and European regulations, allows us to close the circle, or to return the substances that we needed for food to the soil" said Giordano Colarullo, general manager. of Utilitalia, called into question regarding the recent fine that the European Union has imposed on Italy to sanction us the insufficiency in the management of waste water

I therefore believe that by adopting a 360-degree vision of wastewater management, both industrial and civil, it is possible to create an integrated system between institutions, companies and citizens who live in the same territory, to minimize the environmental impact of waste. and at the same time to optimize the recovery, in the form of energy or clean materials, of resources that we could certainly manage in a better way.
