Hospitalized in Zurich, he had undergone surgery on his right shoulder in June, but the conditions of the former CEO of FCA and Ferrari have worsened in recent days until his condition is irreversible.

The last time Marchionne had represented FCA in public was at the end of June, shortly before hospitalization, when he presented the new Jeep Wranglers supplied to the Carabinieri. An event which he particularly cared about since his father was in the Army.

On that occasion he appeared fatigued, but according to the Italian newspapers he had explained to the collaborators to foresee a rapid convalescence after the operation in Zurich.

The news was confirmed a few minutes after the death of the president of FCA and of the holding company Exor, who wrote in a message: "Unfortunately, what we feared happened. Sergio, the man and the friend, is gone. I think that the best way to honor his memory is to treasure the example he has left us, to cultivate those values ​​of humanity, responsibility and openness of which he has always been the convinced promoter.
