Plane departed from New York hijacked and forced to emergency landing in Athens

(Giovanni D'Agata - "Rights Window”) Some ultra Orthodox Jews hijacked a plane on which they were traveling due to the delay accumulated on Friday afternoon. The plane of Israel's national airline, El Al, in fact, was supposed to depart New York on Thursday at 18:30 pm local time and arrive in Tel Aviv on Friday afternoon. However, due to a snowstorm, the plane was stopped and the departure postponed to the following day. Meanwhile, a group of Haredi, in order not to breach their religious observances that prohibit traveling on Saturdays, according to one of the dictates of the Shabbat, have asked the flight attendants to make them leave the plane in New York. Nonetheless, the plane left shortly after in the direction of Israel, with the assurances, for worried passengers, to catch up during the flight. However, when it became clear that it was not possible to reach Israel before the start of the Jewish day of rest, the outraged passengers rebelled against the crew. According to witnesses, they screamed and pushed a flight attendant in an attempt to bring the aircraft to land immediately. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post newspaper, citing a post on Facebook by an eyewitness of the accident, Roni Meital, confirmed by a message from the airline. The plane eventually had to make an emergency landing in Athens, while the remaining passengers were able to continue their journey to Tel Aviv on a replacement flight. This flight was defined by one of the passengers: "An eleven hour nightmare".
